462 new coronavirus cases, 14 new deaths confirmed in Ontario

The province of Ontario confirms 462 new cases of the novel coronavirus, marking a 16.5 per cent increase over yesterday’s total. The provincial total now stands at 3,255.

The update from the province also includes 14 new COVID-19-related deaths, bringing the total to 67. There are 1,023 cases now considered resolved.

Another four deaths were reported at the Pinecrest Nursing Home in Bobcaygeon, bringing the total to 20. The home had previously reported that dozens of staff and residents have contracted the coronavirus.

The local health unit says it is the largest outbreak of COVID-19 in the province.

Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti also announced two deaths were reported at the Markhaven Home for Seniors, a 68-year-old woman and a 95-year-old woman.

There have also been four people who have tested positive at the Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener. Another 10 tests are pending and 17 have tested negative.

Grand Valley is the first prison in Ontario to report a positive COVID-19 test.

There are 462 people hospitalized, 194 in the ICU and 140 of those patients in the ICU are on ventilators.

The backlog of tests has also dropped down to 1,245.

Premier Doug Ford is expected to release modeling numbers Friday that show how many people could be infected with COVID-19 and how many people die.
