Brampton man charged after falsely claiming family member had COVID-19

A Brampton man has been charged after falsely claiming he had contact with someone who tested positive for coronavirus.
Peel police said the 39-year-old Brampton man had told his employer on Friday that one of his family members had tested positive for COVID-19. Because of the claim, the owner shut down his business and sent all employees home.
Three days later, the business owner contact police.
According to police, further investigation revealed there were no family members exposed to the virus, or sick.
The employee, who has not been named, was arrested and charged with public mischief.
This is not the first case of an employee using the highly-contagious virus as an excuse not to come into work.
Last week an 18-year-old Hamilton woman was charged after she allegedly forged a doctor’s note that claimed she had tested positive for COVID-19. Because of her claim, the McDonald’s location where she
worked was shut down for cleaning and all employees were told to self-quarantine.
She was charged with mischief over $5,000, fraud under $5,000, using a forged document and making a forged document.
