Province will pay out over $20M in compensation for Friday’s massive teachers’ strike

Friday’s massive strike didn’t just mark the first time since 1997 that educators from all four major teachers’ unions walked off the job on the same day, it will also mark the largest government compensation payout since the job action began.
The Ministry of Education announced back in January that it would provide parents with a credit ranging from $25 to $60 a day when strike action closes schools or school-based child care centres.
According to numbers provided by the Ministry of Education on Thursday, Friday’s province-wide job action could result in a pay out of nearly $21 million – minus savings from teachers’ salaries.
Ontario’s minister of education Stephen Lecce previously revealed that if every eligible parent applied for compensation, the government would face a potential payout of $48 million.
The province came under fire earlier this month after it was revealed by CityNews some parents had been overpaid. The Ministry said it was due to an error when calculating the number of days that schools have been closed.
