City of Toronto, province sign preliminary agreement to expand GTA transit

It’s officially in writing. City of Toronto and provincial officials have signed off on the preliminary agreement to expand transit in the GTA.

Toronto city council approved the plan back in October. The transit projects include the Ontario Line and the Yonge North subway extension.

In a statement, Mayor John Tory called the signing an “important step.”

“The signing of the preliminary Toronto-Ontario Transit Partnership Agreement is an important step in getting this work done and ensuring both governments are working in full cooperation,” he said.

“This agreement will accelerate four major transit projects in our city. Expanding our transit system will help ensure we can accommodate the growth Toronto is experiencing as North America’s fastest growing city.”

Mayor Tory agreed to the deal last year to retain ownership over the city’s subway system in exchange for backing Ford’s Ontario Line over the Downtown Relief Line.

The Ontario Line would run from the Science Centre to Ontario Place, connecting to the Eglinton LRT at the top of the line and would provide interchange points with the existing Line 2 at Pape Station and Line 1 at Queen and Osgoode stations.

The agreement secures an almost $30-billion investment in new transit for the city.
