Durham police have identified a man wanted in connection with a sexual assault investigation where the suspect posed as a police officer.
It was reported that on Friday a female sex trade worker was sexually assaulted by a customer who claimed to be an officer of the law.
The suspected reportedly went to a motel room on Consumers Drive in Whitby around 12:30 a.m., under the guise of being a customer.
He allegedly identified himself as a police officer and began a conversation with the victim.
Police said the woman asked the man to leave several times before he allegedly sexually assaulted her.
The suspect reportedly fled the area on foot and possible got into a car.
Police said the man is cooperating with the investigation. There has been no word on charges.
Police are reminding the public that if they are unsure about the identity of someone claiming to be a police officer, to request a name, a badge and ask to see some identification.
