Residents of a Brampton neighbourhood are reeling following a horrific tragedy that claimed the life of 51-year-old man on Christmas Day.

Peel police say they were called to to Sunny Meadow Boulevard near Sandalwood Parkway and Bramalea Road just before 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

A man was found with life-threatening injuries lying on the side of the road and was rushed to hospital where he died. Police have identified him as Balvinder Bains from Brampton.

Police said the man was the victim of a hit-and-run.

Security video footage circulating on social media shows a man appearing to be speaking with a driver of a white van, believed to be cab. The van attempts to pull away with the passenger side door still open before the man grabs hold of the door and appears to slam it shut. As the victim approaches the passenger side door again, the van backs up, stops and then moves towards the man, striking him. The man is knocked down as the van’s right front wheel rolls over him and then backs up before pulling away.

Police said they are aware that there is a video circulating but would not comment specifically on what is on the video itself.

“We have located the suspect vehicle and we have the suspect in custody at this time,” said Const. Akhil Mooken, who added they have identified the victim but were in the process of notifying next-of-kin.

Investigators were also tight lipped about other details of the case including why the victim was dropped off in this neighbourhood and what may have led to the violent interaction.

Amarjit Lamba, 53, from Brampton, has been charged with second-degree murder. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
