What's it like to grow up in a town with only seven kids?

A wide view across the bay to the village/town of Red Bay in Labrador.

In today’s Big Story podcast, this is a story about the students who attend Basque Memorial, a kindergarten to grade 12 school in a tiny little place called Red Bay, Labrador. All seven of them.

They are the only kids in town. There’s not enough of them to field a baseball team. But there’s a school with nearly a full classroom each. The town of Red Bay, meanwhile, is small, and shrinking. Although this story might be on the more extreme edges of the struggle communities in Newfoundland and Labrador are facing, it is by no means unique in its challenges. So what’s it like to grow up in a town with fewer than 10 kids? And at what point does a town’s shrinking population become unsustainable?

7 is more than enough to play hopscotch

No problem. Just tell Justin…. He’ll gladly send 1000 Syrian refugees to town to fix the problem, along with money to construct a mosque, community centre and the Saudi’s will provide all of the text books and teachings, including teachers, for schools. I mean, after all, we have an election this fall.

This is exactly the kind of problem Justin likes to help with. This will cause a housing boom, improve the local economy and the community will be so much more vibrant, multicultural and diverse. Hotels will be booked with film crews from CBC to show how successful Trudea’s new community is and how happy the former residents are, assuming they can find a couple so they don’t have to hire actors….and if one of the former refugees opens a business in town, there will be CBC documentary.
