Woman charged with impaired driving asks officer to let her order fast food before arrest

A Toronto woman charged with impaired driving at a drive-thru window in Vaughan on Friday wanted an officer to let her order some fast food before she became encumbered by a police investigation.

The burgers would have to wait.

The woman, 34, was arrested and charged with impaired operation and having a blood alcohol concentration over 80mg per 100ml of blood.

York regional police released video of the awkward interaction, which saw the woman try to talk her way out of trouble by claiming repeatedly that she was “just ordering some food.”

Police were called to the restaurant near Highway 7 and Keele Street just after midnight on Friday. The caller told police that a woman was at the drive-thru window, but didn’t order any food and wouldn’t move her vehicle.

When the video begins, the woman is standing outside of the vehicle.

When asked for identification she says, “I wasn’t driving. I was just ordering some food.”

“How did the vehicle get here?” the officer responds.

“I don’t know I was just ordering some food,” she replies.

The officer asks again if the woman will provide identification.

“Yes. Once I get the food,” the woman answers.

The officer informs her that she’s not going to wait for her to wolf down some fries, and the back and forth game continues, until the woman finally relents. “I obviously drove,” she concedes. “But like I wasn’t ready to drive anywhere further.”

She was then handcuffed and placed under arrest.

York police say she was one of 26 people charged with impaired-related offences over the long weekend.
