Manitoba RCMP find items linked to B.C. murder suspects

GILLAM, Man. (NEWS 1130) – For the first time in weeks, police are releasing new physical evidence in the hunt for two B.C. murder suspects.

Mounties in northern Manitoba say they found several items linked to 18-year-old Bryer Schmegelsky and 19-year-old Kam McLeod on a stretch of the Nelson River shoreline on Friday, roughly nine kilometers from where a burnt vehicle linked to the suspects was located.

Police did not say what the items are.

The river search near Gillam over the weekend started after a damaged aluminum boat was discovered there.

Mounties said a dive team conducted an underwater search “of significant areas of interest” on Sunday.

The area has been the focus for more than a week in the hunt for the two men, suspected in the killings of three people last month in northern B.C.

The news comes after RCMP said last week they would be scaling back their manhunt in the Gillam area, where a burned-out vehicle the suspects had been travelling in was found.

While several potential sightings of the two suspects have been reported to Ontario Provincial Police, there has not been a confirmed sighting for over two weeks.
