RCMP can’t substantiate tip that 2 men spotted in York Landing are BC murder suspects

By The Canadian Press and News Staff

Manitoba RCMP say they have been unable to substantiate a tip that said the two men wanted for killings in British Columbia were spotted in the community of York Landing

But the search is still continuing.

Constant said there are some 30 officers in the remote community of 500, along with a dog team, emergency response teams, helicopters and armed searchers on all-terrain vehicles.

Corporal Julie Courchaine says police are aware it’s a trying time for residents as there’s a lot of uncertainty.

“We need to find them and identify them and then go on from there,” she explained.

Courchaine said people need to stay indoors as much as possible and report anything suspicious.

Helicopters, a plane, heavily armed officers and police canine units descended on the northern Manitoba community after Mounties received a tip Sunday night that two people matching the description of Bryer Schmegelsky and Kam McLeod were spotted near the community’s dump.

The RCMP say officers searched the York Landing area throughout the night and continue their efforts today.

The last confirmed sighting of the two suspects was a week ago in Gillam, another remote community to the northeast of York Landing.

Courchaine said they have received over 200 tips, including the one that brought them to York Landing. They are making a plea to the public to keep submitting tips.

Schmegelsky and McLeod, both from Port Alberni, B.C., are charged with second-degree murder in the death of University of British Columbia professor Leonard Dyck.

The pair are also suspected in the fatal shooting of Australian Lucas Fowler and his American girlfriend Chynna Deese.
