Police arrest, charge man in unprovoked streetcar stabbing

By News Staff

Toronto police say they have arrested and charged a man in connection with an unprovoked stabbing on a downtown streetcar earlier this month.

On July 14 at around 10:35 p.m. police said a man was sitting on a streetcar in the Queen Street West and John Street area when he was suddenly attacked and stabbed repeatedly by another man.

The suspect then got off the streetcar and fled on a bicycle. The victim suffered serious, but not life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police said the reason behind the attack is not clear and the victim was stabbed “without any provocation.”

John Proudfoot, 25, was arrested and charged on July 25 with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon, police said.

He appeared in court on Thursday.
