Man seriously injured in shooting near McCowan and Eglinton

By News Staff

Toronto police are investigating an early-morning shooting in Scarborough.

Emergency crews were called to the scene in the area of Eglinton Avenue East and McCowan Road around 5:45 a.m. Friday, after reports of multiple gunshots.

Paramedics rushed the victim to hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

The victim’s brother, Omar Peters, said he was asleep at the time and was woken up by the gunfire. When he looked out the window he saw his brother walking to their home.

Peters said his brother’s friend made a quick tourniquet to staunch the blood.

“One of his friends, luckily, took off his shirt, ripped it and then put the pressure on it to help him out,” he explained.

Peters said violence isn’t something new for his neighbourhood.

“When you live in an area like this you’re kind of, unfortunately, immune to it so … for me it’s just… trying to get over it and be strong for my grandmother and my brother’s sake,” he said.

Police said two suspects were seen fleeing the area.

Peters said he wasn’t sure what his brother was doing outside but that he thinks the shooting was a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“I don’t think he was targeted it think it was just bad timing,” he said.

No description of the suspects has been released. Police continue to investigate.
