Tory wants proposed Green P space at Eglinton West for housing

Mayor John Tory is speaking out against the Toronto Parking Authority’s plan to tear down several housing units along a section of Eglinton Avenue West to make room for a parking lot.

The proposed Green P site is located at 2204-2212 Eglinton Ave. W. at Caledonia Road, which the Toronto Parking Authority Board bought in 2013.

The parking authority plans to build a new 24-space parking lot at that site, to accommodate future demand when the currently under-construction Eglinton Crosstown LRT opens in 2021.

However, Tory sent a letter to Hartley Lefton, chair of the Toronto Parking Authority Board, expressing “serious concerns” about the parking plan.

“I am committed to building more affordable housing in the City of Toronto and I have made it clear that our priority should be building more of that housing that is closer to transit — especially when we are making investments in new transit construction,” Tory wrote in the letter.

“I believe the City, through the TPA and CreateTO, has a tremendous opportunity to unlock the value of this land and do it in a way that adds to the supply of affordable housing in Toronto.”
