Man dies after falling into elevator shaft downtown

By News Staff

A man has died after falling into an elevator shaft in downtown Toronto Saturday.

Police said they were called to the CBC building at Front and John Streets just before 6:30 p.m.

“It was reported a worker washing windows fell down an elevator shaft,” a spokesperson with the Ministry of Labour said on July 15.

Witnesses at the scene said a man was swinging from cables and fell through an elevator hatch.

Paramedics worked to free him from the elevator shaft, but he died of his injuries on the scene. The identity of the man is still unknown.

The ministry said an inspector has been assigned to the case and the victim’s employer was Solar Group Inc.

“No orders or requirements have been issued. Our investigation is ongoing,” the ministry said.

In a written statement, a CBC spokeswoman said that there was an accident in the Toronto Broadcast Centre on Saturday and that the public broadcaster is in contact with both the authorities and the property management company.
