A scorching start to July in the GTA

By News Staff

It likely won’t meet the formal definition of a heat wave, but the GTA is still in for a scorching start to July.

The area will see highs pushing 30 C and the humidity will make it feel downright tropical for most of the week.

“This week, what’s really dominating is the humidity — it’s really starting to build. By Thursday and Friday it’s going to feel more like 39,” 680 NEWS and CityNews weather specialist Denise Andreacchi explained.

With heat like this, Andreacchi says it’s good to take the proper precautions.

“(Take) breaks indoors when you can and limit your excessive activity outside. Make sure you’re taking lots of water breaks and remember to practice your sun protection.”

Earlier this year Toronto Public Health (TPH), along with other city divisions, announced it was ramping up its response to heat this summer by organizing a city-wide heat relief strategy with the creation of a Heat Relief Network.

The network includes libraries, community centres and pools, some civic centres and city facilities as well as drop-ins and several private and non-profit organizations, including some shopping malls and YMCA locations.

On Tuesday there’s a risk of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon — some of which could be severe over southwestern Ontario.
