A 29-year-old Barrie woman suffered multiple fractures after a tire came off another vehicle on the northbound lanes of Highway 400, near Highway 89 and crashed through her windshield.

Her injuries are serious but considered non life-threatening.

The incident happened just before 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said a front wheel came off a passenger vehicle that was heading northbound and bounced into the southbound lane, striking the woman’s car.

CityNews has confirmed that the vehicle the tire came off was being driven by an off-duty Toronto police officer.

“Toronto Police confirm an off-duty member of Toronto Police Service was involved in a collision on Highway 400 earlier today,” Toronto police said in a statement.

“His Supervisor went to the scene for a wellness check on the officer and while present did remove some TPS property from the vehicle.”

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said air ambulance has taken the injured woman to a trauma centre.

The highway was closed for the collision investigation but has since reopened.
