Mother, 7-year-old son hit by truck in Brampton, husband charged

A 41-year-old man is facing charges of criminal negligence and dangerous driving after his wife and their seven-year-old son were struck by a truck in the driveway of their own home in Brampton.

Police originally said he had been charged with impaired driving, but after further investigation, those charges were dropped.

Emergency crews were called to the scene around 8:40 a.m. Tuesday in a residential area near Creditview Road and Bovaird Drive West.

Police said the woman’s husband was reversing the truck in the driveway when he ran over his wife and son. The truck then backed into the garage of the unit next door, causing damage to the building.

Peel police Const. Bancroft Wright further explained that the vehicle moved in a circular fashion while backing up, starting from one unit and then crashing into the unit beside it. He says the woman and her son were by the driver’s door when they were struck.

“They were at the driver’s door. So the driver’s door was open and the driver was sitting on the driver’s side. He backed up, striking them with – I’m going to assume the door – but that’s yet to be determined by the investigators,” he said.

He also added that there is structural damage to the unit the car collided into and it’s structural integrity will have to be checked before the vehicle is removed.

The husband was arrested at the scene.

Johnathon Leon from Brampton is facing two counts each of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing on Wednesday in a Brampton court.

Police said the mother and child were sent to a local hospital but then transported to a trauma centre.

Their injuries were initially considered life threatening but police later said they were both in stable condition.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact police.
