Burlington man calls 911 to report fake shooting after cellphone stolen

A Burlington man is under arrest after calling in a fake gun call to police after his cellphone was stolen.

It happened around 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

Halton police told 680 NEWS the man, believed to be in his 20s, wanted a faster police response to his stolen cellphone report so he decided to make a bogus 911 call.

The man told police someone had been shot on Walkers Line, south of the QEW.

Police swarmed the area searching for a victim and a gunman. The canine unit was even brought in to assist with the search.

When police learned the truth about the fake call, the man was arrested.

He is facing a charge of public mischief and conveying false message.
