Another extreme driver caught on OPP-patrolled highway

By News staff

A 19-year-old man is facing a stunt driving charge after he was caught driving 201 km/h on Highway 403 in Mississauga.

In a tweet on Monday night, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the driver had his vehicle impounded and licence suspended for seven days.

This latest incident comes on the heels of a weekend that saw provincial police nab 31 extreme speeders on highways across the GTA. In one incident, a 54-year-old man was caught going 190 km/h on the 403 in Burlington.

On Monday, Toronto police launched a week-long safety blitz targeting speeders. According to police, 43 per cent of fatal crashes happened on roads where the speed limit is more than 50 km/h.

Last year, police in the city issued more than 45,000 speeding tickets to drivers and around 380 summons to drivers for stunt driving.

Currently in Ontario, anyone caught driving more than 50 km/h above the speed limit will have their driver’s licence suspended and vehicle impounded for seven days. If convicted, drivers can be fined between $2,000 and $10,000, and could also serve six months in jail, along with a longer licence suspension.
