New poll suggests minority government, but which one?

By News Staff

If a federal election were held today it would result in a minority government, according to the latest survey from Mainstreet Research.

The question is whether it would be a Conservative or Liberal minority.

Among decided voters, the Mainstreet poll found Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives with just over 37 percent support across the country while the Liberals under Justin Trudeau have the support of 35 percent of those surveyed.

The NDP, under new leader Jagmeet Singh, have close to 12 percent support while Elizabeth May’s Green Party remains steady at 7 percent support.

The poll results show the Conservatives with solid leads in both Alberta and the Praries while they are up by less than four points in B.C. The Liberals have a three point lead in Ontario while enjoying strong support in Quebec and Atlantic Canada.

Maxime Bernier’s People’s Party could be the wildcard in the upcoming election. While they are the choice of just under 4 percent of committed voters, the party enjoys it’s strongest support in Quebec, B.C. and Alberta.

The Mainstreet survey also revealed that 63 percent of those polled want to see a change in government and that almost 22 percent of those who said they were voting Liberal also said they wanted change.

The survey involved 8,501 respondents between March 19 – 25. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 1 percent and is accurate 19 times out of 20.
