Niagara regional police are investigating an assault on the campus of Brock University that sent three students to hospital.

Police said they were called to the St. Catharines campus around 8 p.m. following reports of a shooting.

When they arrived, they found three injured men in their 20s — all students at Brock — near a residence.

Two victims were stabbed and the third man was injured after a struggle with the suspects. Initially, police said the third person may have been shot by a pellet gun.

The students’ injuries were not life-threatening and they have since been released to hospital.

“It is very early in the investigation but there are indications that this was a targeted incident,” Const. Phil Gavin said. “There is no ongoing threat to safety.”

Police said they were searching for four suspects who were seen fleeing the campus in a car. However, police later said they were searching for two male suspects.

According to police, suspect #1 is in his 20s with a slim build and possibly of East Indian descent. He was wearing a dark toque and a dark mask covering the low portion of his face, and dark-coloured clothing.

Police said suspect #2 is also in his 20s with a slim build and possibly of East Indian descent. He was wearing light-coloured clothing and possibly grey pants.

There were reports the campus had been put into lock down but police confirm there was never a lock down requested or implemented.

Police said the weapons used by the suspects, which included a knife and a pellet gun, have not been recovered.
