Mississauga wants to separate from Peel Region

By News Staff

Mississauga is wasting money by being part of the Region of Peel, hurting residents and businesses, according to Mayor Bonnie Crombie.

Crombie tweeted on Wednesday that council passed in principle her motion to ask the province to pass legislation that would see Mississauga become independent from the Region of Peel.

“Analysis shows we send $85 M to the Region to fund the growth of other cities,” Crombie tweeted. “This is not fair to residents and businesses.”

“Our money should go towards Mississauga priorities. We must be able to govern our affairs and set our vision without interference.”

Crombie said Mississauga will be hosting a community meeting to hear from the public before “finalizing our position.”

“(It’s) money that we can be spending on our own residences, our own businesses and our own growth,” she told CityNews. “And we have a lot of growth and development occurring here in our city … it’s money that … should be spent in our own city.”
