Rain and thunderstorms expected Thursday afternoon in Toronto & GTA

By News staff

Toronto and the GTA are in for a soaking Thursday afternoon into the evening.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for several rounds of rain in a large part of southern Ontario including Toronto, Hamilton, Halton, Peel, York and Durham regions.

Ten mm of of rain is possible and with the milder temperatures, Environment Canada says there’s a risk for flooding since the ground is still frozen or snow-covered.

There’s also a chance for isolated thunderstorms, which could boost the rainfall totals into the 15 to 25 mm range by Thursday night.

Flooding possible

Spring-like temperatures and rain in the GTA over the next two days, combined with melting snow, has prompted flooding concerns.

“All rivers within the GTA may experience higher flows and water levels, resulting in potential flooding and hazardous conditions, especially behind bridges and culverts where ice jams are present,” the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) said.

The TRCA is asking everyone to exercise caution around all bodies of water, and to keep their children and pets away from any slippery and unstable banks.

680 NEWS meteorologist Jill Taylor said showers are in the forecast for Friday as well. The high will be near 10 C but the temperature is expected to fall to 6 C by the afternoon.
