Freezing rain warning ends for Toronto and GTA

By News staff

Environment Canada has ended a freezing rain warning for Toronto and most of southern Ontario.

“In most areas, the freezing rain should change to rain rather quickly as temperatures rise above the freezing mark,” said the national weather agency.

“Slippery conditions are likely tonight into early Sunday morning as a result.”

A special weather statement remains in effect for the winds expected on Sunday.

CityNews meteorologist Adam Stiles said from 11 p.m. Saturday night until 5 a.m. Sunday morning, a mixed mess of precipitation across the GTA was expected.

Between 15-25 millimetres of rain are expected to fall before it tapers off on Sunday afternoon.

The rain will be accompanied by strong winds with gusts of up to 80 km/h expected in some areas on Sunday.

Along with the rain comes a chance for flooding as the snow and ice melts.

Credit Valley Conservation warns of increased water levels and flows throughout the Credit River watershed as well as slippery conditions created by the freezing rain.

“There is an increased potential for existing ice jam remobilization with higher flows,” they said in a release. “Local streams and rivers will become dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts, bridges and dams. People should be warned to stay away from all watercourses, especially children and pets.”
