Driver charged after passing out drunk behind the wheel: police

York regional police have released video of a suspected impaired driver passed out behind the wheel of a pickup truck that was stopped at an intersection in East Gwillimbury.

Police say they received a call just after 5 p.m. on Feb. 11 about a driver who appeared to be sleeping in a vehicle that was stopped at Green Lane, west of Leslie Street.

The video shows an officer approaching the vehicle and trying to rouse the driver.

“The driver is passed out,” the officer tells dispatch. “I can’t wake him up and the vehicle is in drive.”

“Sir, are you alright?” the officer can be heard asking the man. “You’re sleeping. You’re passed out.”

The officer then informs the groggy man that he’s under arrest for impaired driving.

In a release, police said the man smelled of alcohol and later blew more than two-and-a-half times over the legal limit.

They say it was one of 29 arrests for impaired driving over the last week. So far in 2019, more than 200 people have been charged with impaired driving in York Region.

“We are reminding drivers that York Regional Police conducts RIDE spot checks year-round and that our officers are always watching for suspected impaired drivers,” police said in a release. “We also continue to encourage citizens to call 9-1-1 if you spot a suspected impaired driver.”
