GTA cleaning up from Tuesday’s winter storm mayhem

By News staff

The GTA continues to clean up from a winter storm that walloped the region with snow, ice, rain, freezing rain and gusty winds.

There were dozens of closures and cancellations across the GTA on Tuesday, and the blowing snow and icy conditions made for treacherous roads and sidewalks. The storm also led to power outages and ice falling from buildings.

Toronto Hydro responded to several outages across the city and were still working on restoring power to remaining homes and businesses as of Tuesday morning.

The area of York and Harbour streets had been closed since Tuesday due to glass falling from the window of a building. Police said ice from the storm was making it dangerous for a fix to be done.

There were also some lingering transit issues on Wednesday. Buses replaced streetcars on the 512 St. Clair route due to weather-related issues. On the 506 Carlton streetcar line, shuttle buses were running between Lansdowne Avenue and High Park Station due to a track problem.

There were some school bus cancellations in the GTA due to ongoing weather issues.

Although the winter storm has made its way out of the GTA, 680 NEWS meteorologist Jill Taylor said another two to three centimetres of snow would be possible on Wednesday. The temperature will continue to fall throughout the day with the windchill expected to be near -15 overnight.
