Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives are attacking student unions in a fundraising email, saying the groups get up to “crazy Marxist nonsense.”

The message sent out by the party highlights the government’s move to make some fees paid by college and university students – including those for student unions – opt-in instead of mandatory.

The fundraising email says students were “forced” into unions and made to pay for the groups.

The message then says the Tories fixed that problem and asks for a donation to the party.

Student organizations have said the government’s changes to fees will make post-secondary institutions less transparent as groups like student unions hold administrations to account.

Some fees will remain mandatory including those for walksafe programs, health and counselling, athletics and recreation and academic support.
