Bundle up for a frigid Friday in the GTA

By News staff

Winter is not even a month old yet and already Friday is the coldest morning of the season so far in the GTA.

As of 5 a.m. the temperature was -13.7 C but with the blistering wind it felt like -24 C.

The last time the GTA was in the deep freeze was back in autumn, when the temperature was at -13.3 C with a windchill of -22 on Nov. 22.

On Thursday, Toronto’s medical officer of health issued an extreme cold weather alert for the city. It will be lifted at noon Friday.

During the alert, the city activates local services, which includes extra street outreach for the homeless and the opening of the warming centre at Metro Hall. The warming centre will remain open until noon.

680 NEWS meteorologist Jill Taylor said the windchill will improve to -13 by Friday afternoon as the temperature climbs to -5 C. The low-teen windchill values will continue into the overnight hours.

The good news is that the icy cold weather will relax somewhat this weekend. CityNews weather specialist Frank Ferragine says the temperature will be -5 C on both days with sunshine on Sunday.
