TTC board meeting for first time since October election

The first meeting of the new-look TTC board is taking place on Thursday and several groups of advocates will waste no time letting the new board members hear their concerns.
The eight-member board, which was put into place after the October municipal election, includes Coun. Jaye Robinson, who is the new chair. The rest of the board does not include any returning councillors.

The board was all but obliterated during the election with only one member, Denzil Minnan-Wong, surviving reelection.
Robinson will be joined by first-time councillors Brad Bradford and Jennifer McKelvie, as well as Shelley Carroll, Jim Karygiannis, and three appointed city residents. A vice-chair will be named from that group at Thursday’s meeting.
Advocates for people with disabilities will address the board. The group is concerned that accessibility upgrades aren’t happening fast enough.
Right now, only 45 of 75 stations are accessible or under construction, and upgrades for Runnymede and Wilson stations are up for discussion at the meeting.

Meanwhile, demonstrators from five advocacy groups, including TTCriders, are planning a rally at 12:15 p.m. in Nathan Phillips Square.
TTCriders is calling for, among other things, an increased city subsidy to the TTC in order to stave off a future fare hike. They also say they’re concerned about how a $40-million funding cut from the province will put extra pressure on the TTC budget.
The group will also present the new board with an oversized “welcome card” with messages and signatures written on it.
The city’s budget committee meets on January 28.
