An 18-year-man is dead after a drive-by shooting in Rexdale on Wednesday night.

Toronto police say the man was walking on Redwater Drive near Elmhurst Drive and Islington Avenue when a dark-coloured vehicle pulled up beside him and a gunman inside fired several shots.

The victim tried to run away but he collapsed at the scene.

Police were called to area just before 9:30 p.m. and the homicide unit has now taken over the case.

Paramedics transported the 18-year-old victim to hospital via an emergency run, where he later died.

One woman, who did not want to appear on-camera, said she heard at least five shots, looked out her door and saw the victim collapse. Her son ran out to help and held victim’s head until paramedics arrived.

A white Honda on Redwater Drive could be seen surrounded by police tape as part of the crime scene, which included a nearby plaza.

Residents said they heard gunshots outside the plaza around 9:20 p.m.

Neighbours say a woman driving the white vehicle just happened to pull up to the stop sign at the time of the shooting. They say she jumped out of her car and tried to get help as well.

Police said several men were seen fleeing the scene in a black car. Earlier, police said as many as four suspects were seen running away from the area.

There’s no word on suspect descriptions at this time.

This is Toronto’s third homicide of the year.
