Family: Alabama tries to shield officer who killed black man

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Relatives of a black man shot to death by an Alabama police officer who apparently mistook him for a shooting suspect are complaining about the state’s decision to take over the investigation from Birmingham’s first black district attorney.
The mother of Emantic “EJ” Bradford Jr., April Pipkins, said Monday that family members feel authorities are trying to protect the officer who fatally shot her son Thanksgiving night in the state’s largest shopping mall.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced last week he was taking the case from newly elected Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr to prevent any conflict of interest.
A Bradford family attorney, Ben Crump, says the case should go to a black woman who also serves as a district attorney in Jefferson County.
