Police have identified a 29-year-old man who died after a shooting in Etobicoke on Wednesday.

Around 6 p.m., officers got a call about a Honda Civic that had struck a tree at Islington Avenue and St. Andrews Boulevard, near Dixon Road.

When they arrived, they found a man inside with apparent gunshot wounds.

He died at the scene.

Police have identified him as Jonathan Gayle-West, of Oshawa.

An autopsy will be conducted on Friday.

The 29-year-old, known to friends as Jonny Gayle, worked for several sports stations in Canada, including CityNews’s sister station Sportsnet.

Sportsnet anchor and former CityNews sports reporter Danielle Michaud mourned his loss on Twitter.

“Jonny G. was so kind, and had a smile that’d warm you up in an instant,” she said. “I only have the best memories working with him. My thoughts are with his family and friends. Just sickening.”

Police are asking anyone who had contact with Gayle-West on Wednesday or who has dashcam video of the area around the time of the crash to call them.

This was Toronto’s 93rd homicide of the year.
