Toronto police say five people were injured and three of them are in custody following a two-vehicle crash in Scarborough on Saturday.

Police, fire and paramedics responded to a call for a collision around 4 p.m. near Birchmount Road and Foxridge Drive, north of St. Clair Avenue East.

Police say one vehicle left the road and struck a fence.

Another vehicle was on fire and Toronto Fire tells CityNews the vehicle was still smoking when they arrived.

All occupants were removed from the vehicles and three people were taken to a trauma centre with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Two others were taken to a local hospital.

It is unclear why the three people were taken into custody.

Roads in the area are closed for the investigation.
