1 of 3 men who attacked man with autism in Ontario sentenced

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – One of three men involved in an unprovoked attack on a man with autism in Ontario earlier this year has been handed his sentence.

Twenty-five-year-old Ronjot Singh Dhami has been sentenced to 12 months in jail and two years of probation — but he’s free today because of time served.

Dhami pleaded guilty to aggravated assault.

NEWS 1130 Legal Analyst Michael Shapray notes the sentence was agreed upon by both the Crown and Defense.

“And there’s quite a strict law in Canada for a judge that gets presented that type of proposal on sentencing that they’re not to deviate from it unless it’s totally out of the range of appropriate sentences,” he says.

Dhami, who is originally from B.C., is shown on surveillance footage with two others beating the victim at bus station in Mississauga in March.

Shapray says when it comes to whether or not it may appear to be a light sentence, people need to remember that both the Crown prosecutor and the defence lawyer have agreed upon it, “and the judge has some law suggesting that unless it’s completely out of their range, they are to follow those types of sentences.”

“Based on that information, I don’t know that it would be fair to call it a light sentence in light of the number of people who would have had to look at that as being appropriate or not based on the accused’s background, the facts of the case, and other circumstances that may have been before the court.”

Shapray adds there are other factors that play into a person’s sentence, like pleading guilty early.

Police had said Ronjot turned himself in after a Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest in March.
