A man charged with first-degree murder in connection with a deadly house explosion in Kitchener is the husband of the woman who died in the incident.

Waterloo Region Police say the man was arrested on Monday — nearly six weeks after the explosion that rocked a quiet residential neighbourhood in August.

Udo Haan, 58, is also charged with one count of arson – disregard for human life and two counts of arson – damage to property.

Haan, who also lived in the home, was seriously injured in the blast and police say he remains in hospital. He made a short court appearance via phone on Tuesday. His condition is unknown.

The explosion on Aug. 22 levelled the home and caused extensive damage to some nearby residences.

The body of 58-year-old Edresilda Haan was found in the backyard of the destroyed home and her death was ruled a homicide, although the official cause of death has not been released.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The court has placed a publication ban on the case, prohibiting the publication of evidence presented moving forward.
