Toronto police say a 15-year-old boy has been shot and killed in Regent Park.
Paramedics pronounced the teen dead in an apartment building on Sackville Street just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
Police have since identified him as Mackai Bishop Jackson.
The homicide squad has taken over the investigation.
This is the city’s 81st homicide of the year and the second shooting death in the last 24 hours.
Catherina Perez, who is running for city council in the upcoming election, was dropping her daughters off to music class not far from the scene of the deadly shooting.
Perez noted that the revitalization of Regent Park hasn’t magically erased the social ills that lead to gun violence.
“You can put up new buildings, you can make things look beautiful but the reality is the issues are not being dealt with,” she said.
The latest rash of violence comes on the heels of an eight-week Toronto police pilot project that saw 200 more officers deployed to high-risk neighbourhoods.
Tackling gun violence was a hot topic at Tuesday night’s mayoral debate.
