Goodbye summer, welcome autumn: weekend events embrace both fans

For those of you who love autumn — from its fresh air to the red and gold leaves — the season arrives at 9:54 p.m. on Saturday. And just as it should be for the arrival of fall, temperatures will be in the mid-to-high teens all weekend long.

If you are venturing out this weekend, there are several events taking place that will appease both fans of summer and autumn.

If you are driving into the city or planning to take transit, be mindful of some road closures and a late opening on a portion of Line 2. Scroll below to read the list.

Events

Harvest Apple Festival
Celebrate the start of fall at Evergreen Brick Works’ first annual Harvest Apple Festival. The free festival will take place during the Saturday Farmers Market and the Sunday Artisan Market. Saturday will focus on the tasty food and drinks that you can create with Ontario apples, while Sunday will be a day for family fun. Locally grown apples will also be for sale.

Bruno Mars Concert
Bruno Mars is bringing his 24K Magic World Tour to Toronto this weekend. He’ll be performing at the Scotiabank Arena on Saturday and Sunday at 8 p.m. This is the third concert tour for the 32-year-old. The 24K Magic Tour wraps up in November in Honolulu.

MOCA Grand Opening
The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) is hosting its official public grand opening this Saturday. There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. and the museum will open its doors at 11 a.m. Guests will be able to explore all five floors of the museum all weekend long for free. Some of the artists will also be on hand to discuss their work. MOCA is located at 158 Sterling Rd., near Bloor Street and Lansdowne Avenue.

Toronto Beaches Festival
Enjoy the last moments of summer at the Toronto Beaches Festival. The event kicks off at Woodbine Beach on Saturday at noon and runs until Sunday at 6 p.m. It features over 40 vendors at the Beachside Market, ’80s and ’90s music, local restaurants, craft beer, wine, cocktails and more. Admission is free all weekend long. The festival takes place rain or shine.

Queen West Art Crawl
The Queen West Art Crawl is taking over Trinity Bellwoods Park this Saturday and Sunday for its annual Outdoor Art Exhibition. The event features a selection of the province’s best artists and artisans, along with a kids zone, performance zone, Steam Whistle beer garden and food vendors. The art crawl is a charitable organization that celebrates and promotes the art, culture and diversity of Queen West in Toronto. The exhibition runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.

TTC and road closures

Late opening on portion of Line 2
Subway service from St. George to Broadview stations will start at noon Sunday due to beam replacement work on the Prince Edward Viaduct. Shuttle buses will be running.

Oasis Zoo Run
The following road and lane closures will be in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. on Saturday:

  • Plug Hat Road will be closed from Beare Road to Meadowvale Road
  • One lane on Meadowvale Road will be closed from Plug Hat Road to Sheppard Avenue East
  • Old Finch Avenue will be closed from Meadowvale Road to Reesor Road
  • Southbound lanes of Reesor Road will be closed from Steeles Avenue East to Old Finch Avenue

 

Queen West Art Crawl
The westbound curb lane of Queen Street West will be closed from Gore Vale Avenue to the front of Trinity Bellwoods Park from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Heroes of Suicide Ceremony and March
The east sidewalk fronting 1083 Pape Ave. and the northbound curb lane of Pape Avenue from Woodville Avenue to O’Connor Drive will be closed from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
