GTA students walkout to protest sex-ed repeal, more planned for Friday

Last Updated Sep 20, 2018 at 4:05 pm EDT

Around 200 GTA high school students walked out in protest of the Ford government’s repeal of the updated sex-ed curriculum.

Students at Malvern Collegiate and Notre Dame Collegiate walked out of class on Thursday at 1 p.m.

It came one day before a student-led “day of action” is scheduled to take place at schools across the province. Those rallies will happen on Friday between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Some schools are walking out today due to PA days and other scheduling issues.

Students are also protesting the exclusion of Indigenous issues from the curriculum and the $100-million in budget cuts made by the provincial government.

Organizers say students need to show the provincial government that they do not consent to the changes.

In July, the Ontario government rolled back the updated 2015 sex-ed lesson plans — eliminating the mention of topics like same-sex marriage, sexting, and gender identity.
