Mississauga scrapyard fire finally under control

By News Staff

A stubborn three-alarm fire at an auto scrapyard in Mississauga Thursday evening was finally under control more than 12 hours after it started.

The fire started at a metal recycling facility next to the scrapyard on Mavis Road, south of Central Parkway West, around 7 p.m. Thursday.

In an update at 10 a.m. Friday, Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services said crews had managed to control the fire, and the smoke had cleared.

Officials said people should still avoid the area.

Peel police had previously evacuated neighbouring businesses as a precaution and asked residents to stay in their homes, close their windows and turn off their air conditioning as thick, black smoke billowed into the sky.

At the height of the blaze, close to 11 fire trucks had responded.

“Our biggest problem is access,” District Chief Paul Richard said at the time. “What we have right now is a large pile of tires as well as some crushed cars that are burning. They’re compressed and what happens is the water has trouble penetrating to the fire.

“It’s an exhausting, dirty fire.”

No injuries were reported.

Fire crews are expected to remain at the scene throughout the day.

Mississauga Fire Chief Tim Beckett said the investigation into the cause of the fire can’t start until the it is completely out.

He added the Ministry of the Environment, which had been monitoring the air quality levels in the area, has deemed the area safe.
