Environment Canada confirms tornado touched down Monday night in Hawkestone

By News Staff

A tornado officially touched down in Hawkestone during Monday night’s storm over Lake Simcoe.

Environment Canada said that based on video evidence seen on social media, as well as footage captured by an employee who lives in the area, they determined that at least one tornado touched down in the Hawkestone area around 8 p.m.

On Monday, the agency said two dangerous thunderstorms moved through the area that were capable of producing a tornado. They confirmed that a brief tornado was seen over Lake Simcoe, east of Hawkestone, affecting areas including Lindsay, Mariposa and Grasshill.

Environment Canada said it wasn’t aware of any substantial damage caused by the tornado but employees would be on the ground on Tuesday to assess the width of the damage. They are hoping to hear from anyone with damage caused by the storm east of the Lake Simcoe area.

There has been no word on what category the tornado was.

People from across southern Ontario shared their photos and videos as the system moved through their neighbourhoods:
