A 42-year-old Richmond Hill woman is dead and her three-year-old daughter remains in hospital with critical injuries after a three-car crash in Oshawa.

Durham regional police say just before 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, a grey Toyota SUV was travelling westbound on Raglan Road just west of Thornton Road when it drifted over the centre line and sideswiped a Toyota Corolla which was going eastbound. The SUV then spun into the path of a white Jeep Cherokee which was behind the Corolla.

The female passenger in the SUV was found without vital signs and later succumbed to her injuries in hospital. The child, who was in a rear car seat, was taken to Sick Kids hospital in life-threatening condition.

The others involved in the crash suffered minor injuries.

A 42-year-old man from Richmond Hill faces four impaired driving-related charges including impaired operation causing death and impaired operation causing bodily harm.

The victims’ and suspect’s names are not being released to protect the identity of the child.

Correction: Police initially said the woman was 43 years old
