Benefit concert for Danforth shooting victims among weekend events

This weekend is a busy one in the city with several events taking place, including the Taste of the Danforth and a benefit concert for the victims of the Danforth shooting.

If you plan to travel around the city using the TTC, a portion of Line 1 will be closed for construction.

Events

Taste of the Danforth
Taste of the Danforth returns to Greektown this weekend, for its 25th annual event. The festival kicks off on Friday night and runs until Sunday. There will be over 150 great eats from local vendors, along with free entertainment. Highlights include the age-old tradition of smashing plates, a sports zone, Hollywood on the Danforth and a kids’ fun zone. Taste of the Danforth also celebrates Canada’s multiculturalism, with a “Let’s Dance” stage where guests can enjoy 15-minute dance lessons from Greek, Chinese, South Asian, Filipino, and other groups.

Toronto Together
A benefit concert is being held at the Danforth Music Hall on Saturday night, in support of the victims of the deadly shooting on the Danforth on July 22. The attack claimed the lives of 18-year-old Reese Fallon and 10-year-old Julianna Kozis and left 13 others injured. Acts include Billy Talent, City & Colour, Pup and more. The concert gets underway at 7 p.m., with proceeds supporting the #TorontoStrong fund.

Sweetery
Canada’s largest sweets festival is taking over David Pecaut Square this weekend. Sweetery celebrates local chefs, students and artists. Vendors include Eva’s Original Chimneys, Holy Cannoli, The Coffee Barn and Mankind Desserts. There will also be six activity tents with sweet-related games, benefiting Second Harvest. Guests can indulge their sweet tooth between noon and 11 p.m. on Saturday and noon and 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Roundhouse Craft Beer Festival
If you are a beer connoisseur and want to support your local craft breweries, you will want to be at the Roundhouse Park this weekend. Steam Whistle Brewing is hosting a beer festival on Saturday and Sunday, where you can not only sample beers from Ontario Craft Brewers but also taste the delights from the the city’s best food trucks. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door.

Paws in the Park
Help puppies find their forever home at the Toronto Humane Society’s largest annual fundraiser, Paws in the Park. The event takes place on Saturday at Woodbine Park between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Aside from the adorable, adoptable pups, there will be food, a pet photo both, a Vendor Village and free doggy training sessions. Paws in the Park helps provide a significant portion of the Toronto Humane Society’s annual operating costs.

Rosé Picnic
Rosé all day! That will be the vibe at the Stanley Barracks Gardens at Hotel X on Saturday for the Rosé Picnic. The event features great wine, delicious food, and music from Canada’s top DJ’s. There will be 20 local brands offering samples and giveaways. Guests will receive a branded wine glass and are encouraged to wear pink or white clothing. The event runs from noon to 11 p.m.

Sail-In Cinema
Sugar Beach turns into a cinema on Friday and Saturday. How perfect is it to watch a movie outside with the lake just a few steps away? The movies — Labyrinth and Space Jam — will be shown on a two-sided floating screen set up on a barge in the harbour. You can either watch from the beach or if you have a boat, just drop your anchor. No tickets are needed. The movies start at 7:30 p.m. but arrive early to ensure a spot.

TTC and road closures

Partial Line 1 closure
Subways won’t be running on Line 1 between Lawrence and St. Clair stations due to work on the Eglinton Crosstown LRT and other TTC work. The closure will be in effect on Saturday and Sunday. Shuttle buses will be running.

Road closures

Taste of the Danforth: Logan Avenue from Danforth Avenue to the south side of the laneway north of Danforth was closed starting at 3 p.m. on Thursday. Then on Friday, Danforth Avenue between Broadview and Jones avenues will be closed as of 10 a.m., while Pape Avenue from Lipton to Hazelwood avenues will be closed from 6 p.m. on Friday. The roads will reopen at 4 a.m. on Monday.

Feast of St. Lawrence: Front Street East between Scott and Church streets will be closed from 9 a.m. on Friday to 2 a.m. on Saturday. Market Street from Front to Wilton streets will be closed from 4 a.m. to midnight on Saturday.
