2 dead after multi-vehicle crash, suspected carjacking in Brampton, Etobicoke

A multi-vehicle crash and a suspected carjacking in Brampton has left two people dead and several others injured.

Peel police said around 1 a.m. on Friday a suspect was driving a white Mercedes-Benz at a high rate of speed when he clipped a car and then smashed into another vehicle near Steeles Avenue West and McLaughlin Road

A 60-year-old man, who was driving one of the vehicles that was struck, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another person had serious injuries.

Police said the Mercedes-Benz driver got out of the car and tried to carjack another car but the woman inside wouldn’t open the door, so he stole another vehicle, reportedly belonging to someone who had stopped to help those injured in the crash.

The suspect then fled down Steeles to Kipling Avenue where his vehicle hit another car and then struck a pedestrian, a man in his 20s. The pedestrian was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Toronto police say he died on injuries in hospital later on Friday.

The driver then continued along Steeles to Weston Road where his vehicle struck several other vehicles.

Police said the suspect then jumped out of the vehicle and tried to steal a TTC bus before he was finally arrested.

“While the suspect did attempt to take control of the bus, he was unsuccessful and was quickly arrested by police,” TTC spokesman Brad Ross said.

Ross said no one was on the bus at the time.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been notified but they have not invoked their mandate.
