The executive committee has voted to approve recommendations for enhanced security measures at city hall.
The deputy city manager has proposed checking the bags of anyone who enters city hall, as well as installing walk-through metal detectors at the entrance of council chambers.
Mayor John Tory said he doesn’t think metal detectors would compromise safety.
“Obviously, when these things are being implemented, great care will be taken to make sure everybody is safe and that we make sure that for … something like a fire that people could properly get out of the chamber,” he said.
Currently, only visitors going into council chambers have their bags checked for prohibited items, like weapons.
The matter will go to city council for approval on June 26.
