Yorkville murder was an ‘unprovoked attack on defenseless man:’ Toronto police

Toronto police are calling the shooting death of Matthew Staikos in Yorkville an “unprovoked attack on a defenseless man.”

Staikos, 37, was shot and killed near Bay Street and Yorkville Avenue on Monday night.

Witnesses told police they heard at least three gunshots in the area around 11:30 p.m.

When emergency crews arrived at the scene, Staikos was found with gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Staikos founded Torch Mobile about 15 years ago which was eventually acquired by Blackberry.

Police say the shooter intentionally shot Staikos, but they’re not sure if the two knew each other or what the potential motive may have been.

The suspect is described as a black man in his mid-20s to late 30s, five-feet-ten-inches tall with a slim to medium build. He was wearing dark clothes at the time of the shooting.

Police have released photos and surveillance video of the vehicle they believe the shooter used to flee the scene. The vehicle has been identified as a silver four-door Mercedes Benz and the shooter is believed to have gotten into the passenger’s seat.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
