Durham regional police officer charged after Toronto shooting

The province’s police watchdog says an officer with the Durham Regional Police Service is facing charges in connection with a shooting in Toronto in September.

The Special Investigations Unit says officers from the police force east of Toronto met on Sept. 7, 2017, to discuss the apprehension of a 21-year-old man wanted on arrest warrants from the Bowmanville, Ont., area.

The SIU says when the man left his Toronto home by car, Durham officers followed him and were involved in an “interaction” with him sometime later.

It says one of the officers discharged his firearm, striking the man, who then drove away from the scene. He was arrested days later by Toronto police.

The SIU says 47-year-old Det. Const. Colin Goodwin was arrested Thursday and charged with one count of aggravated assault, discharge of a firearm with intent and reckless endangerment.

He is scheduled to appear in a Toronto court June 21.

“The matter is now properly before the courts. In consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will make no further comment,” the agency said in a statement.

The SIU is an arm’s-length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
