Appeal court agrees with sentence for Edmonton teacher who had sex with girl

EDMONTON – Alberta’s highest court has upheld a 10-year sentence for an Edmonton teacher who had sex with a student.

The Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal of Paul Martial, who wanted a shorter sentence.

He pleaded guilty last year to sexual interference and child luring.

Court heard the offences started in 2012, when Martial was 47 and the girl was 13, and lasted over two years.

The Appeal court agreed that the sentencing judge made no errors and that 10 years is not unfit for the crime.

The court says that while the girl was not in Martial’s class, he was still in a position of trust and caused the victim harm.
