Police arrest two in alleged theft of baby shower gifts from condo loading dock

Toronto police say two people, a man and a woman, have been arrested after a couple told CityNews over $5000 worth of their belongings were stolen from a condo loading dock as they were moving in late last month.

Meagan and Ciaran Dayal, who are expecting their first child, were moving into their new condo building in the Richmond Street West and Peter Street area on April 28 when several boxes that were temporarily left unattended vanished from the loading dock.

The boxes contained expensive electronics, jewellery and gifts from a recent baby shower.

Security images captured a man and woman loading the boxes into a van before taking off.

CityNews reporter Adrian Ghobrial confronted the male suspect when he returned to the scene of the alleged crime two days later.

The man admitted to taking the boxes, but said the items were “garbage.”

“There were people here, they didn’t say anything, they were here they told me it was garbage…we didn’t take anything, it was […] dishes, garbage,” he said in Hungarian.

Police have since arrested Attila Bozik, 48, and Anna Horvath, 42, of Toronto.

They’re both facing charges of theft over $5000 and possession of property obtained by crime.

Police say some, but not all of the items, have been returned the Dayals.

“They were able to recover almost all of my jewelry, and about 80 per cent of baby shower gifts,” Meagen told CityNews on Tuesday.

“We are beyond grateful and feel so lucky to even have anything returned. We truly believed our items were gone and we would be left to replace it all.”
