Toddler dies after falling into septic tank southwest of Calgary

A two-year-old boy has died after falling into a septic tank at a rural property in Priddis, southwest of Calgary.

Turner Valley RCMP, local fire, EMS and STARS air ambulance responded to a home near Highway 22X just before 1 p.m. Thursday.

Corporal Curtis Peters said they received reports of a child who had fallen into an underground septic tank.

“The child was taken out of the tank by emergency crews and rushed to hospital, extensive life-saving efforts were made but tragically the child was pronounced deceased at the Alberta Children’s Hospital,” said Peters.

He adds, the boy was being supervised at the time of the fall and did everything they could to save him.

Peters explained it’s not clear if the lid to the septic tank was moved or lifted off for any reason but that will come out in the investigation.

“The Turner Valley RCMP will work along with the medical examiners office to determine what happened and investigate the death, we don’t have any determination at this point as to any cause or matter of death whether it’s accidental criminal or anything like that.”
