Anarchist book fair linked to vandalism in Hamilton: police

Hamilton police say they have evidence linking Saturday night’s vandalism on Locke Street to an anarchist book fair held in the city over the weekend.

Sgt. Mike Cunliffe confirmed the connection in a news conference on Tuesday afternoon. He did not elaborate on the nature of the evidence, saying the investigation is ongoing.

Cunliffe added police have determined the direct route taken by the black-clad mob. The group convened at Durand Park, marched down Bay Street and then turned on Aberdeen Avenue and proceeded down Locke Street. Anyone within a three-block radius of the area who might have video of the incident is being asked to get in touch with police.

On Sunday, Insp. Paul Hamilton said police were aware of the Hamilton Anarchist Bookfair, but a connection was not confirmed at the time.

A band of masked vandals describing themselves as “ungovernables” roamed through the trendy commercial area of Locke Street on Saturday night, hurling rocks at small businesses and causing up to $100,000 in damage.

No injuries were reported and police say it is unclear if or what the group was protesting.

No arrests have been made at this time as police continue to comb through footage and witness accounts of the incident.
